Portrait - James Randi

Portrait of the Amazing Randi -- I've always thought he had an awesome face.
This piece is about a year old, cobbled together from a few different photos.

  1. The values are stunning. You've got such nice extreme values and I salute you.
How would you build the values in a piece such as this. Do you get down and dirty with your values off the bat or do you prefer to build up from darks or lights?

    Thanks for sharing.

  2. Johan: I tend to work in a couple of different ways. For something like this, I'd tend to start in linework and add values as I go. For things like the brink characters, I always tended to start with black silhouettes and go straight into value and colour very opaquely on top.

  3. I see that you are a great artist, but might you be a skeptic too? James Randi is awesome, you should show this to him, I bet he would love it.

  5. I agree about the raves on this portrait. You've got the cute cleft in my nose just right, and that's one of my major charm spots! Please contact me - randi@randi.org - and my minions will forward your note to my private address, okay?

    James Randi.
